POMELO GROWERS ACHIEVE HIGHER INCOMES
RLF Crop Nutrition Programs Key to their Success

Because of poor crop performance last year, pomelo grower Mr Tang met with the RLF Sales Manager for Guangxi Province, Shen Zhiqiang and the team from an Agricultural Management Specialist in Meizhou in January 2019 to find an immediate solution for his pomelo garden this season. Now more than three months have passed, and Mr Shen and the team have repaid a visit to check the application effects of RLF products on Mr Tang’s pomelo crop.

The leaves of the Honey Pomelo treated
with RLF products

The field observation in the pomelo garden showed that the Honey Pomelo treated with RLF products had large and thick leaves which turned dark green, and that its spring shoots matured about 6 days earlier. The early maturing of spring shoots will produce enough nutrients to supply the young fruit in the later stages. This solves the problem of fewer weak old leaves and lays a solid foundation for the follow-up nutrient supply to the fruit trees.

The Comparisons

On the Leaves

The thickness of the Control crop leaves was 0.37mm, with the thickness of the leaves treated with RLF products
being 0.4mm. The leaves of the Control crop were also small and thin.

On the Bud Size

The transverse diameter of the Control bud was 13.92mm with the RLF-treated bud being 14.01 mm.

The longitudinal diameter of the Control bud was 22.45mm with the RLF-treated bud being 29.27mm.

By contrast, it was found that the RLF-treated buds were large and strong, and the ratio of strong flowers accounted for 70% of the whole garden. This would greatly improve the efficiency of flower thinning.

On Styles

The diameter of the Control style was 6.88mm, with the RLF-treated style being 8.77mm. The RLF-treated pomelo had longer pollen tubes, larger styles, strong and plump flowers and the fruit setting rate was estimated
at approximately 80%.

Income calculation

According to the yield analysis, the average yield of a tree treated with RLF products is 250 jin (125kg), and the Control yield is about 230 jin (115kg). The purchase price of Sanhong Honey Pomelo in the past year was 3 yuan (0.63AUD) per jin, that is, 60 yuan (13AUD) more for a tree. And with 320 trees, this means 19,200 yuan (4,049AUD) more than the Control crop.

Through data collection and analysis with the local farmers, it was found that RLF products had an excellent effect on protecting and strengthening the flowers of Honey Pomelo, and the vigour of the tree recovery was good. These facts were strongly recognised by
Mr Tang.
