VideoNo. 11 | Integrated Fertiliser Management

Grant Borgward talks about

Farmer and National Sales Manager for RLFs
About this Series
An informative and insightful video series featuring Grant Borgward has been released for 2016.

It has been called FARMER TO FARMER with very good reason.

This series has been developed to enable farmers everywhere to draw knowledge and inspiration from a fellow farmer as well as to spread further the message of RLF products.

Grant Borgward talks about Integrated Fertiliser Management

If I can talk now about integrated fertiliser management (IFM).

Put simply, it is how we look at, and allocate, the farmer’s set budget for his fertiliser spend
each year.

At RLF we’re going to say, “spend some of it on granular fertiliser, some of it on seed treatment and some of it on a foliar spray” – this is IFM.

And the reason we want you to spend some of the budget on all three pathways to the plant, is that if you put it all in as granular, you can’t get such good utilisation of that granule. So, to get something to help the plant gain greater access to the granular in the soil, we also need to work with the plant to allow it greater access to the soil – which of course is the farmer’s main asset.

Without the soil you can’t grow a crop.

The fertiliser’s job is to improve what you get out of the soil. If we then take it a step further with the seed treatments and foliar sprays, we are improving the enhancement we’re getting from the
NPK fertiliser.

As a rough guide, if we spend 80% on NPK (or granular fertiliser) and 20% on seed treatments and foliar sprays, we’ll get a much greater return than if we spend 100% on granular fertiliser only. It is generally accepted that granular fertilisers give uptake in the vicinity of between 10% and 50%.

What we are homing in on here, is the fact that we can get greater uptake of the granular fertiliser by introducing the crops to integrated fertiliser management (IFM). By using Ultra Foliar with Broad-spectrum technology to take care of paddock variability and seed treatments to get a crop out of the ground with higher yield potential from day one is the way to go.
