Grant Borgward talks about How BSN Seed Primer Works
RLF’s seed primers are specifically developed to fertilise the seed.
I know that sounds a bit strange, but what we are able to do is get nutrient inside the seed with a simple seed treatment. It is widely accepted that farmers put fungicides on their seed, but they normal leave fertiliser until the planting of the seeds, or even post applications.
But we can now put fertiliser inside the seed, to set that plant up for a much higher yield and more vigorous germination.
It’s often said that getting the crop out of the ground is half the battle, so 50% of your job is done as a farmer once you have good emergence. Getting the crop out of the ground though can be a stressful time for any farmer. If you don’t get enough rain it is going to try and germinate, and then stop. If you get too much rain you might get crusting over the top.
So, if we pack more nutrients inside the seed via BSN Seed Primer, or as we like to call it, seed fertiliser, we are giving the plant more nutrient reserves. This allows it to germinate so that it’s got a lot more punch to shoot through the soil and put a larger root system on to put it in better shape for a more vigorous germination.
In the early hours of germination, the seed has no access to the soil reserves of nutrients or the base fertiliser that it was seeded with.
So it is important that the seed reserve is at a good level. Now as a farmer you can simply accept the nutrient levels, or you can put on BSN seed primer, which is basically a seed fertiliser that increases the critical levels of phosphorous, zinc, copper, manganese and molybdenum.
The significance of having elevated levels of phosphorous, is basically that we’re putting 300% more available phosphorous inside the seed. That gives the seed more energy, and more nutrient to put a larger root system on – with more energy and more power to push through the crust to get that crop out of the ground.
Once the plant puts on a larger primary root system it has then got greater access to the soil reserves of nutrient, and greater access with increased plant root interception of the fertiliser that was planted with the seed.
